Threading the Needle

Post by rod »

Here's a cute hand. You opened 1♠, LHO overcalled 2 and partner drove to 4♠. LHO leads the ♣6.

♠ A82
Q53
K103
♣ K1093

♠ K9653
K842
Q54
♣ A

It doesn't look very good. You smoothly call for the ♣10 and RHO covers with the J. Next you try the 4 and LHO hops up with the Ace and returns the 2.

That was helpful. Now what?

Play Ace and King of trumps (LHO drops 10 and Q) and then a low heart to dummy. LHO must duck, and RHO will then be out of hearts.

♠ 8
53
K
♣ K93

♠ --
AJ106
98
♣ 2
♠ J
--
J
♣ Q8754

♠ 965
K84
5
♣ --

Cash dummy's last diamond and exit with a trump. If RHO has the 13th diamond, let him cash it while you toss a heart. Either way he will then be forced to lead a club giving you two heart discards and 10 tricks.
