In the spirit of preparing a rebid, the commonly recommended answer with the first hand is to open 1♦ and rebid 2♣. You might instead rebid 1NT if partner responds in your singleton major.
I don't recall discussions of hands like the second one but I'd call 1♥. 1♠ is a trap because you don't have the values to bid both suits; you'll lose a 4-4 heart fit and may not even find a 5-3 spade fit.
At the virtual table my robot partner responded 1♠ and then took a preference to 2♦, leaving me in the 4-2 fit. Here's what I think is the "correct" auction:
