Rebid Problem

Post by rod »

This is from the Coffs Gold Congress teams event, Saturday morning, match 4. You are East, vulnerable against not, and North deals and passes.

♠ AK6
A
J107653
♣ KQ6

You open 1, partner responds 1♠, back to you. What's your call?

Nothing quite fits. You're not good enough for a jump shift* and you don't have enough spades for a strong raise. 3 seems misguided and unhelpful.

What about 2♣? It doesn't confirm or deny extra strength, and leaves room for an encouraging spade raise.

That was my choice, though my heart sank when it became the final contract! Partner's hand:

♠ 109753
J108
K
♣ J732

4♠ probably makes as the cards lie but is not a great contract. I managed an overtrick in 2♣ for a push board.
