Re: Which Trump Suit?

As the cards lie I think 4♠ makes against best defence but the odds are not as good. Three rounds of clubs, ruffed, a heart to dummy and ♠J won by South, another club from South. If North started with Q8x or K8x of trumps then you're down (North will not cover if you play dummy's ♠10).

Which Trump Suit?

This past weekend, June 11-12, was the Nambucca Valley Swiss Pairs. It had 30 pairs competing in 8 14-board matches. I played with Pauly and we were lucky enough to win. It was a lovely group of friendly, fun-loving people and of course we really enjoyed it. I thought board 3 of match 7 was interest...

Learning Bridge

The Bridge World magazine has a nice introduction to bridge. The first section alone, about why bridge is a great game, is worth checking out!

Strategic Review of Bridge in NSW

John Scudder, chairman of NSWBA, sent this letter to clubs on 29 May, and the Coffs Harbour club forwarded it to its members. It looks like we will see some surveys coming. Introducing a Strategic Review of Bridge in NSW COVID -19 has affected many businesses in NSW adversely. The NSWBA and Affiliat...

Minimal Conventions

My partner Doug is a strong player but doesn't like to use many conventions. I do see the wisdom in that. In yesterday's club game I picked up this on board 27: A109,Q9,KQJ42,986 Our opponents were Phil the club's president and his adorable wife Bambi. Doug opened the bidding with 1 ♦ and I'm immedi...

Stayman or Pass?

As commonly played, Stayman requires at least game-invitational values. But sometimes your hand strength depends greatly on whether you have that 4-4 major fit. Consider this holding when partner opens a 15-17 notrump: 10,Q762,A1096,J764 If the contract is notrumps you have 7 points. If it's hearts ...

Would you find this defense?

Interesting deal from this month's Coffs Harbour Bridge Club Swiss Teams, match 8, board 25. North deals, EW vulnerable. 1095,2,1094,AJ10653 J87,J1095,Q87,Q74 A643,Q873,KJ3,K2 KQ2,AK64,A652,98 At our table North opened 3♣, I doubled and South bid 3NT. West led ♥ J, South won the Ace and ran the ♣9. ...

Unusual Notrump Musings

I held this hand yesterday as dealer. 963,AJ,KQ85,J643 I passed as did LHO and partner, and RHO opened 1♠. I overcalled 1NT on the theory that it must be "unusual" for the minors, since a passed hand cannot possibly hold 15 or more HCP. At the table nobody, including my partner, could fath...

Re: Gambling Three Notrump

Which reminds me, I remember once when RHO opened 1NT I had a running 7-card club suit and nothing else. I doubled, redoubled, all pass. Fun times.
