Championship Bridge with Charles Goren

I ran across this black-and-white TV series on YouTube recently. It ran from 1959 to 1964 in the USA. While most of us don't play rubber format these days, it's interesting to see how little the game has changed since then, and how famous bridge personalities interacted with each other.

Correct opening bid?

White vs. red, you hold this as dealer: 10,AJ97643,J,Q954 There are a few principles that I follow. 12-13 points, including distribution, to open at the 1-level in first or second seat. I count 11 here. When preempting be within 2 tricks of the contract at unfavorable vulnerability, 3 at equal, 4 at...

Re: Strategic Review of Bridge in NSW

Attracting new players is clearly vital. Before re-inventing the wheel I think NSWBA (and ABF) should look at what bridge organizations in other countries are doing and how well it's working. The problem is worldwide and NSWBA should not do this in isolation. I know for example that the American Con...

Re: Which Trump Suit?

As the cards lie I think 4♠ makes against best defence but the odds are not as good. Three rounds of clubs, ruffed, a heart to dummy and ♠J won by South, another club from South. If North started with Q8x or K8x of trumps then you're down (North will not cover if you play dummy's ♠10).

Which Trump Suit?

This past weekend, June 11-12, was the Nambucca Valley Swiss Pairs. It had 30 pairs competing in 8 14-board matches. I played with Pauly and we were lucky enough to win. It was a lovely group of friendly, fun-loving people and of course we really enjoyed it. I thought board 3 of match 7 was interest...

Learning Bridge

The Bridge World magazine has a nice introduction to bridge. The first section alone, about why bridge is a great game, is worth checking out!

Strategic Review of Bridge in NSW

John Scudder, chairman of NSWBA, sent this letter to clubs on 29 May, and the Coffs Harbour club forwarded it to its members. It looks like we will see some surveys coming. Introducing a Strategic Review of Bridge in NSW COVID -19 has affected many businesses in NSW adversely. The NSWBA and Affiliat...

Minimal Conventions

My partner Doug is a strong player but doesn't like to use many conventions. I do see the wisdom in that. In yesterday's club game I picked up this on board 27: A109,Q9,KQJ42,986 Our opponents were Phil the club's president and his adorable wife Bambi. Doug opened the bidding with 1 ♦ and I'm immedi...

Stayman or Pass?

As commonly played, Stayman requires at least game-invitational values. But sometimes your hand strength depends greatly on whether you have that 4-4 major fit. Consider this holding when partner opens a 15-17 notrump: 10,Q762,A1096,J764 If the contract is notrumps you have 7 points. If it's hearts ...
