God one Rod. With S J9 you have to first eliminate doubleton Q possibility in either oppornents, an if so you know that S are either 3-3 or 4-2. I would take this all the time, if I am in sound concentration state. Even if it is Jx I would do the same.

Partner has minimum 8 points. RHO 4C bid suggests 5 clubs and some values and Diamond shortage. So the question is guessing if the partner has one of the 2 missing Aces (S & H) and if so then then 3 to 5 defensives tricks would be plausible (1 or 2D, 2 or 3M), hence DBl is reasonable. However I ...

I am 50/50 on 3D sign-off. Ax Spade holding has more value than just one trick and Clubs are headed by the K, so not much wastage either. So in the balance I would bid 4D and if the partner has shortage then game is on. As you know I am a bit more aggressive...

Hand is too flat, so I would certainly investigate 3NT. It looks like maximum 8 tricks without feature from the partner against good defence.
